Non Verbal Communication Across the Ages
Generational gestures made with the hand create a symbolic, silent language. A shorthand way of sending a message without the need for words. Many gestures we make today have both a long history and historical significance.
In 1892, anthropologist Frank Hamilton Cushing published “Manual Concepts: A Study of The Influence of Hand-Usage on Culture Growth” in The American Anthropologist. He contended that hand gestures are what make humans distinct as a race. Centuries earlier, Aristotle argued that language was humanity’s defining characteristic, but Cushing said the way we use our hands is even more significant than what comes out of our mouths.
In Western culture, the finger or the bird or flipping someone off is used to express contempt but it can also be used humorously or playfully. Although there are several names for this universal code that has been around for centuries, the meaning is undeniable. Whether over sports, politics, or family feuds, this symbol of protest and defiance reinforces that a single finger can be worth much more than two words.
One of the oldest recorded gestures, believed to have been used by the crowds in Ancient Rome to save or condemn defeated gladiators. Today, it is synonymous with the icon of the Facebook Like.
The ‘V’ sign first emerged in popular culture as a symbol for victory during the second world war, but it became famous as a symbol of peace for the 1960s counterculture during the Vietnam War. The “V” also indicates the divide between reactionaries and progressives.
