A language void of dialect, instinctively understood no matter race, religion, gender, generation, geography, ethnicity, size, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, political persuasion, profession or philosophy—if you’re a micro.

Did You Know…

Etsy launched the first-ever Microbusiness Caucus on Capitol Hill. With the release of their 2017 US Seller Census, Crafting the future of work: the Big Impact of Microbusiness, Etsy reveals that it’s truly powered by microbusinesses that have fewer than ten people – over three-quarters of them are one-person operations.

5 Generation Workforce

Silent 1928-1945 . Some working. Youngest 72.

Boomers 1946-1964 . Reaching retirement age of 65 at the rate of 10,000/day.

Generation X 1965-1980 . Largest % of microbiz owners.

Gen Y Millennials 1981-1996 . 75 million workforce equals Boomers.

Gen Z 1997 –   .  Beginning to enter the workforce.

Non Verbal Communication Across the Ages

Generational gestures made with the hand create a symbolic, silent language. A shorthand way of sending a message without the need for words. Many gestures we make today have both a long history and historical significance.

In 1892, anthropologist Frank Hamilton Cushing published “Manual Concepts: A Study of The Influence of Hand-Usage on Culture Growth” in The American Anthropologist. He contended that hand gestures are what make humans distinct as a race. Centuries earlier, Aristotle argued that language was humanity’s defining characteristic, but Cushing said the way we use our hands is even more significant than what comes out of our mouths.

THE BIRD

In Western culture, the finger or the bird or flipping someone off is used to express contempt but it can also be used humorously or playfully. Although there are several names for this universal code that has been around for centuries, the meaning is undeniable. Whether over sports, politics, or family feuds, this symbol of protest and defiance reinforces that a single finger can be worth much more than two words.

THUMBS UP

One of the oldest recorded gestures, believed to have been used by the crowds in Ancient Rome to save or condemn defeated gladiators. Today, it is synonymous with the icon of the Facebook Like.

PEACE

The ‘V’ sign first emerged in popular culture as a symbol for victory during the second world war, but it became famous as a symbol of peace for the 1960s counterculture during the Vietnam War. The “V” also indicates the divide between reactionaries and progressives.

2018 Predictions

A bubble will burst

There’s a bubble out there, but no one knows for sure where it is. Stocks, housing, car loans, student debt…chances are we’re about to have the other shoe drop. Again.

You’ll get hacked

Maybe it’ll be personal, maybe it’ll be your business. One way or another, you’re going to have to put up with someone getting their hands on something you wish they didn’t.

The independent workforce will reach 50% faster than expected

Lower taxes will likely incent businesses to speed up plans for Ai (Artificial Intelligence) meaning fewer human jobs vs more.

The chaos continues

Although everyone’s expecting things to calm down, ain’t gonna happen. Our karma is broke and there’s no quick fix.
